Would it be an option get an extra field in properties of the cables?
That would be easy to put the length of the cable in so the guys now on the field how much cable is reserved for that run.

This is now implemented. Will be included in the next release.
It is a textfield, so you can write also something like "25m" or "100ft". In the Cable List it will be shown after the cable type, but only when filled in:
